Couples Counselling London
Sarah Demaree MSc, PTSTA (P)
Paul McManus PG.dip, PG.cert
The most difficult thing any of us ever attempt to do is to live in close relationship with another human being, a human being who is completely different to us, who has different likes and dislikes, different hopes and fears. And we get absolutely no training. We get taught how to hold a knife and fork, cross the road, add up and take away, pass exams, write CVs but no one teaches us how to be in relationship.
We offer couples counselling online and in person from our practice in central London. We also run training workshops for therapists who want to begin working with couples or who want to broaden their knowledge.

Training
Paul and Sarah work individually with couples. They are both trained in Transactional Analysis but their approach is slightly different. Paul specialises in working with couples where one partner may be (or may suspect they are) autistic or ADHD.
Sarah also offers family therapy and supervision, both individually and in groups.
Paul and Sarah run training courses and workshops and have developed a model for working with neurodiverse couples.

Introduction to Working with Couples
Starting January 14th

Introduction to Working with Couples
An online certificate course run over six fortnightly Wednesdays, aimed at qualified therapists who want to start working with couples as well as those looking to enhance, refresh or expand their existing couples therapy practice. Applicants for the course must have completed 100 hours of supervised counselling practice or 100 supervised hours in a similar field, eg coaching, organisational, etc. (this need not be with couples).
There are many different methods of working with couples; in this course, which will have a strongly practical orientation, we will focus on Transactional Analysis (TA) and well-known TA-adjacent approaches, eg Imago Relationship Therapy, Bader Pearson Developmental Model, etc. We will cover everything from the initial intake and contracting to negotiating endings.
You will learn how to work with the issues most frequently encountered in couples counselling, including betrayal, sexuality and desire, and high conflict couples. You will also learn to identify and work effectively with what is probably the most commonly occurring and most frequently missed issue that brings couples into counselling - neurodivergence. We will present you with our own model, specifically developed to work with neurodiverse couples.
You will have the opportunity to take part in experiential learning with the course leaders and fellow participants and by the end of the course we hope you will come away with the confidence and enthusiasm to grow your couples practice. Completing the course will count for 36 hours of CPD or, for TA trainees, 36 hours of advanced psychotherapy training.
Dates and Times:
Online from 10:00 to 17:00 over six Wednesdays in January, February and March:
Jan 14th, Jan 28th, Feb 11th, Feb 25th, March 11th, March 25th.
Cost:
£660 for the full 36 hours of CPD.

Weekend Workshop - Working with Neurodiverse Couples
A practical guide to identifying and working with neurodivergence in couples counselling
Spring 2026 | Dates TBC
If you are working with couples, you are almost certainly already working with neurodiverse couples, whether or not you or they are aware of it. Our workshop is designed to give you an understanding of how the difference in neurotypes manifests itself in relationships, the difficulties these differences commonly create, and how to deal with them successfully in counselling.
Drop us an email and we'll send you the dates and details as soon as they're confirmed.
